Looking for a Dentist in Harleston? What to Expect at Your First Visit
Published 8 October 2026
At your first visit to a dentist in Harleston, we'll chat about your health and any worries, check your teeth, gums and soft tissues (including an oral cancer screening), take X-rays if needed, then explain what we've found in plain English. You'll leave with a clear treatment plan and costs, with no pressure to decide on the day.
The boxes are unpacked. The bins are sorted. You know which day the market's on. But "find a dentist" has been sitting on your to-do list for months, quietly judging you.
Or maybe you're not new to the area at all. It's just been a while. A long while. And every time you think about picking up the phone, a small voice asks what they'll say when they look in your mouth.
If that's you, take a breath. Nearly every new patient I meet has felt exactly the same.
Below, I'll walk you through each step, what to bring, what it costs and how we look after nervous patients.
What happens at your first dental appointment?
Your first appointment is mostly a conversation and a careful look, done at your pace.
- Arrival and a few forms. Our reception team will say hello and hand you a short form to fill in. There's no rush. Have a seat and settle in.
- A chat about your health. We'll ask about any medicines you take, medical conditions, and anything that's been bothering you. This is also the perfect moment to say, "I'm a bit nervous." It genuinely changes how we work, in a good way.
- A full examination. We check every tooth, your gums and your bite, plus the soft tissues of your cheeks, tongue and throat. That includes an oral cancer screening. It takes a minute or two and doesn't hurt at all.
- X-rays, if needed. X-rays show what our eyes can't, like decay hiding between teeth or problems under the gum. We only take them when they're useful for you.
- Explaining what we found. We'll talk you through everything, often with photos or your X-rays on screen. No jargon, and no question is too small.
- Your treatment plan and costs. If anything needs doing, you'll get a written plan with prices before any treatment starts. You can take it home and think it over.
- Booking your next steps. That might be a hygienist visit, a follow-up appointment, or simply your next check-up.
How long does a first dental visit take?
For most patients, a first visit takes around 30 to 45 minutes.
We deliberately book a little longer than a routine check-up. That way, nobody is watching the clock and you have time to ask everything you want to ask.
What should you bring?
Just a few things, and none of them are complicated.
- A list of any medicines you take (a photo of the boxes works fine)
- Details of any medical conditions or recent hospital treatment
- Old dental records or X-rays, if you have them (not essential)
- Your reading glasses, if you need them for forms
- Any questions or worries, jotted down so you don't forget them in the moment
Will the dentist judge me if I haven't been in years?
No. Honestly, we won't.
Life happens. People move, lose a dentist, have a bad experience as a child, or simply let it slide while juggling work and family. We see this every single week.
What matters to us is where you go from here, not why you didn't come sooner. Some of my favourite patients first walked in apologising for their teeth. A few months later, they were the ones telling their friends to book.
How much does a new patient appointment cost?
A private new patient examination at our Harleston practice costs £120, and you'll always get a clear price before any treatment begins.
We see both NHS and private patients. If you're eligible for NHS care, a check-up comes under the NHS Band 1 charge, currently £27.90. You'll find every price, NHS and private, on our dental treatment fees page.
Prefer to spread the cost? Our Denplan membership covers your routine check-ups and hygienist visits for a small monthly fee, starting from £13.78 a month. For bigger treatments like crowns or implants, we offer interest-free finance through Tabeo, spread over up to 12 months. Take a look at our dental payment plans and finance options to see what might suit you.
Thinking about anti-wrinkle injections or fillers while you're here? Those are priced separately on our facial aesthetics prices page.
The one promise we can make? No surprise bills. If you're unsure about anything, just ask. We'd much rather you did.
What if I'm nervous about the dentist?
Tell us, and we'll shape the appointment around you.
A few things we do for anxious patients:
- We explain before we do. No sudden surprises. You'll know what's coming next.
- You get a stop signal. Raise your hand and we pause. Straight away, every time.
- We slow things down. We can book a longer slot so nothing feels rushed.
- A chat-only first visit. If even the chair feels like too much, we can simply talk first.
- Bring your headphones. A favourite podcast can work wonders.
Nerves are normal. You don't need to be brave to come and see us. You just need to turn up.
Why patients from Diss, Bungay and Beccles choose Harleston
Flexible hours and specialist care under one roof make the short drive worthwhile for many local families.
- Appointments that fit around work. We're open until 7pm on Wednesdays and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays.
- A specialist on site. Dr Safa Somi is a Specialist in Prosthodontics (MClinDent, MPros RCS(Ed)), so crowns, bridges and implants can often be planned without a referral elsewhere.
- Easy to find. We're at 24–26 Redenhall Road, Harleston.
- Everything in one place. From check-ups and hygienist visits to children's dentistry, Invisalign and emergency appointments.
We also welcome patients from Pulham Market, Long Stratton, Eye, Hoxne and Brockdish.
A typical new patient's first visit
James had moved to Pulham Market with his family and hadn't seen a dentist in six years. A filling had cracked, and he'd been chewing on one side ever since, telling himself he'd sort it "next month."
He booked a Wednesday evening slot so he didn't have to take time off work. When he arrived, he mentioned to reception that he was dreading it.
We started with a chat. Then a gentle examination, two small X-rays, and a look at the photos together on screen. The verdict: one filling to replace and a little gum inflammation that a hygienist visit could help with.
He left with a written plan, the costs in black and white, and two appointments booked. His words on the way out? "Is that it? I've been worrying about this for years."
What I tell every new patient
After years of first appointments, these are the things I find myself saying again and again.
- The hardest part is booking. If you've made the call, you've already done the difficult bit.
- Tell us everything. Even the embarrassing bits. Especially those. It helps us help you.
- You're in charge. Nothing happens without your say-so, and you can always stop.
- Always ask about cost first. We expect it, and we're happy to go through it.
- Small and often beats big and rare. Regular check-ups usually mean smaller, simpler treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to register with a dentist?
In England, you don't register with a dentist in the same way you register with a GP. You can simply book an appointment with a practice that has space. Some practices keep regular patients on their books, so it's worth asking how ours works. Struggling to find space anywhere? Read our guide to finding a dentist in South Norfolk.
Are you accepting new patients?
The quickest way to check is to book online or call us on 01379 854466.
Can I book a check-up on a Saturday?
Yes. We're open from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays. These slots are popular, so it helps to book a little ahead.
Will I need X-rays?
Not always. It depends on your dental history and what we see during your examination. If we recommend them, we'll explain why first.
How often should I have a check-up?
It varies from person to person. Your dentist will recommend a gap based on your own oral health, which could be a few months or up to two years.
